This position designs and manages an effective, comprehensive and ongoing development program on behalf of the programs of the Academic Health Center supported by the Minnesota Medical Foundation. These include the Medical School, the School of Public Health, the Cancer Center and the Stem Cell Institute at the University of Minnesota. Particular emphasis will be on leading a group of major gift fund raising professionals assigned the Neurosciences and strategic programs of the Academic Health Center. Responsibilities include planning, implementation, promotion, coordination and administration of an effective development program with an emphasis on major gifts.

Responsibilities

  • Under the supervision of the vice president of development of the Minnesota Medical Foundation, plan and direct the unit-based fund-raising programs with emphasis on major gifts, both current and future.
  • Provide day-to-day supervision, coaching and mentoring for directors of development assigned to units including developing an annual plan for achieving fund-raising success, regular review of progress, and development of major gift strategies for assigned prospects.
  • Work as part of the Development Leadership Team with fellow Associate Vice Presidents to provide leadership, operational management, consistent expectations and communication, and a supportive and vibrant culture for MMF.
  • Work closely with the assigned directors of development, department chairs, department administration, dean's office, faculty, committees, and volunteers to determine appropriate fundraising priorities and needs, and coordinate and participate in the identification, evaluation, cultivation and solicitation of prospective donors, including patients, friends, physicians, foundations, corporations and organizations.
  • Work with the assigned directors of development to create the budget for the department's fund-raising program and administer it within the comprehensive budgets of the Minnesota Medical Foundation.
  • Maintain a personal portfolio of major gift prospects to meet annual goals set with the vice president of development. Work with the MMF CEO, Academic Health Center and University leaders and faculty on the cultivation, solicitation and closing of major, principal and transformational gifts.
  • Develop and administer ongoing training/mentoring programs to enhance the major gift fund-raising skills of unit directors of development and development officers.
  • Recruit, organize, train and work with volunteers as needed in support of fund-raising and closely related activities.
  • In collaboration with MMF's marketing and communication teams, develop and oversee the development of proposals, marketing materials and events in support of specific fund-raising activities.
  • Clear and coordinate prospective donors through the Minnesota Medical Foundation prospect management system and help to coordinate MMF's prospect activity with that of the University of Minnesota Foundation.
  • Collaborate with colleagues across disciplines on donor strategies. File timely contact reports, maintain accurate records and provide updated information for electronic databases as appropriate. Serve on committees and attend staff meetings as requested by the vice president of development.
  • Develop an annual plan of work, including specific fund-raising, prospect development and programmatic goals in consultation with the vice president of development of the Minnesota Medical Foundation.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Essential (Required) Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university.
  • Eight to ten years of experience in development, fundraising or closely related experience in a field such as law, sales, marketing or public relations. Demonstrated experience in the identification, cultivation, and solicitation of major gifts.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience with basic business terminology, financial matters and the ethical, legal, and tax-related issues regarding the solicitation, transfer, and management of charitable gifts.
  • Experience in the management of development professionals, including recruitment, training, coaching and performance measurement.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with capital campaigns at an academic or health-related institution strongly preferred.
  • Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
  • Willingness to travel as required by geographic location of prospects.
  • Knowledge and/or experience with Microsoft Office applications and databases; Raiser's Edge preferred.
