Medical School Scholarships

Alpha Epsilon Iota Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Alpha Epsilon Iota, which since 1901 has been a support organization for women medical students and alumni. Minnesota Women Physicians, Alpha Epsilon Iota’s sister organization, arranges professional, educational, and social opportunities for women physicians in our state. Minnesota Women Physicians’ work with AEI supports student scholarships and awards and demonstrates the organization’s commitment to its future members.
Alpha Omega Alpha Scholarship Endowed Scholarship Fund
The Alpha Omega Alpha Endowed Scholarship Fund was created in honor of the 100th anniversary of the Alpha Chapter of Minnesota, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. The scholarship provides annual funding to encourage students to pursue their medical education.

The scholarship is made possible by a grant from the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society.
American Medical Association Foundation Scholarship
The American Medical Association Foundation provides scholarship support for students who demonstrate financial need and academic excellence.
Edwin B. Anderson Memorial Scholarship Fund
The fund was created by Dr. Hubert L. Anderson to honor Edwin B. Anderson. Dr. Anderson was an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1938.
Anonymous Scholarship
The scholarship was established by an anonymous donor in gratitude to the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Fritjof H. Arestad Scholarship
The scholarship was created with funds from a trust established by the late Gladys E. Arestad of Bartlesville, Oklahoma, in memory of her husband, Dr. Fritjof Arestad, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1924.
Arey Family Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Stuart Lane Arey and his wife, Evelyn Baker Arey. The fund honors Dr. Arey, a member of the University of Minnesota Class of 1931; his father, Dr. Hugh C. Arey, Class of 1902; and his brother, Dr. James B. Arey, Class of 1937.
Avera Marshall Regional Medical Center Scholarship
The scholarship was created to support and encourage students from Marshall, Minn. and the surrounding counties to pursue their medical education.
A. B. Baker Scholarship
The scholarship was established by a gift from the Baker family in memory of Dr. A. B. Baker, a 1931 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School and a leading educator and clinician in neurology.
Russell and Harry Baker Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Russell Baker in honor of his father’s career and in recognition of the medical education that Russell received at the University of Minnesota Medical School as a member of the Class of 1934.
Dr. Nellie N. Barsness Scholarship
The scholarship was established by bequest from a trust of Dr. Harry N. Simmonds, Class of 1943, who wished to honor the memory of Dr. Nellie Barsness, Class of 1902.
Hazel Reed Baumeister Scholarship
The scholarship was established by bequest of Hazel Reed Baumeister, to recognize her confidence in her physician, Dr. John Saidy.
Dr. Frederick and Christine L. Becker Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Frederick Becker, Class of 1934, and his wife, Christine, in appreciation for his experience at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. Henry H. and Pauline E. Blaustone Scholarship
The scholarship was created by bequest of Dr. Henry and Mrs. Pauline Blaustone. Dr. Blaustone was an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1920.
Florence J. Bouthilet, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Florence J. Bouthilet and Kenneth B. Fick. The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Bouthilet and Mr. Fick and serves as a lasting tribute to Dr. Bouthilet’s career and accomplishments as a successful physician and mother.
Ruth Boynton Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the bequest of Dr. Ruth Boynton, former director of the University of Minnesota Health Services. She was an alumna of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1920.
Lloyd E. Brimmer Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Mr. Brimmer, who, with his sister, Elva B. Lovell, was a longtime friend and generous supporter of the University of Minnesota Medical School. The fund honors Mr. Brimmer and serves as a lasting tribute to the value he placed on education.
Dr. Arlen Brodin Scholarship
The scholarship was established in honor of Dr. Arlen Brodin’s professional contributions and in his memory by his widow, Gisela Brodin. Dr. Brodin graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1966.
Hampton and Isabella Brown Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Catherine Lowe, a member of the University of Minnesota Medical School Class of 1976. The fund honors her grandparents, who believed strongly in education and hard work.
Schuyler P. Brown Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Arnetta M. Brown, Medical School Class of 1937, and serves as a lasting tribute to the memory of her late husband, Dr. Schuyler P. Brown. Dr. Schuyler Brown was a 1941 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Dr. Harry F. and Grace E. Burich Scholarship
The scholarship was created by Dr. Harry F. and Grace E. Burich to honor the lifework of Dr. Burich, a 1947 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School who practiced surgery in Rochester prior to his retirement. It also honors Grace Burich for her devotion to and support of family and education.
Terrance and Jacqueline Capistrant Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Terrance and Mrs. Jacqueline Capistrant to honor his life work and to express appreciation for support given while he was in medical school. Dr. Capistrant is a member of the Class of 1963.
Dr. Richard A. and Mari Carlson Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Richard and Mrs. Mari Carlson in appreciation for the medical education Dr. Carlson received at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Carlson is a member of the Class of 1972, a radiologist, and former president of the Medical Alumni Society.
Dr. H. Mead and June S. Cavert Scholarship
Colleagues and friends established the scholarship to honor Dr. H. Mead Cavert, former associate dean of the Medical School and a member of the faculty for more than 30 years. Dr. and Mrs. Cavert also contributed to the scholarship.
Dr. Leo W. K. and Julie Cheng Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Leo W. K. and Julie Cheng and serves as a lasting tribute to the value they place on education. Dr. Cheng graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1964, completed his residency at Wayne State University, and served as an assistant clinical professor of neurosurgery at the University of California—San Francisco.
Pansy Page Clark Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Randall C. and Janet S. Warren and honors Mrs. Warren’s great aunt, Pansy Page Clark, who assisted the Warren family financially while Dr. Warren was in medical school. Pansy Page Clark’s generosity also expresses gratitude for the care her son received at the University as one of the first patients to undergo open-heart surgery.

Dr. and Mrs. John I. Coe Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. John Coe, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1944, in grateful appreciation for his medical education.
Richard S. Cole, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Mr. and Mrs. Richard F. Cole and family in memory of their son, Richard S. Cole, a member of the University of Minnesota Medical School Class of 1974.
Donald P. Connelly Scholarship
This scholarship honors Professor Donald Connelly in the Department of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology. His research focused on using information technology tools to support patient care and lead to better patient outcomes.
Thomas P. Cook Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the Hennepin Medical Foundation in honor of the late Thomas Cook, who was its director for many years.
Dr. David and Carol Jean Craig Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship honors the thoughtfulness and generosity of Carol Jean and David M. Craig, M.D., University of Minnesota Medical School Class of 1939, and serves as a lasting tribute to the value they place on education.
M. Elizabeth Craig, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship fund was established through the generosity of Dr. M. Elizabeth “Peggy” Craig, Class of 1945. Dr. Craig specialized in pediatrics and maintained a private practice in Minnesota for 40 years. She held several leadership roles at the University of Minnesota, including president of the University of Minnesota Alumni Association, a member of the Board of Regents, a trustee on the University of Minnesota Foundation board, and director of the Minnesota Medical Foundation board.
Dr. Robert W. Cranston Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Robert Cranston and his wife, Alyce, in appreciation for the medical education he received at the University of Minnesota.
Dr. and Mrs. Stanley B. Crosbie Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Mrs. Crosbie to honor and remember her husband, Dr. Stanley Crosbie, who graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1941.
Joseph W. Dassett, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship was established by bequest of Dr. Joseph Dassett, a pediatrician, who graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1925.
Dean’s Scholarship
These scholarships are funded by multiple donors who have pooled their contributions to provide renewable recruitment scholarships to entering medical students.
Roger Dell Scholarship
The scholarship was established through the Roger Dell Charitable Trust. Roger Dell was a Minnesota judge who practiced law in Fergus Falls.
Margaret Dowell-Gravatt Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Margaret Dowell- Gravatt, who graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1944 and practiced in Oregon. She has a deep interest in encouraging women minority students to study medicine.
Herman E. “Tiny” and Violet C. Drill Scholarship
Dr. Herman “Tiny” Drill was a 1929 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School. He was president of the Minnesota Medical Foundation from 1958 to 1960. The Drill Scholarship was his personal commitment to the Centennial Scholarship Campaign of 1988.
Stephen R. Dunphy, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Trudy Dunphy and serves as a lasting tribute to the memory of her late husband, Stephen Dunphy, and the value he placed on medical education. Dr. Dunphy graduated from the Medical School in 1954.
David A. Dunshee Scholarship
The scholarship was established in memory of David Dunshee, a member of the Class of 1996, by his family, classmates, and friends.
Eunice L. Dwan Scholarship
The scholarship was established with contributions from a trust established by Mrs. Eunice Dwan. It honors the memory of her husband, Paul F. Dwan, who was a faculty member of the University of Minnesota Medical School and a pioneer in pediatric cardiology research.
B.A. Dyar '05 and Robert Dyar '34 Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Robert Dyar, M.D., Ph.D., Medical School Class of 1934, in appreciation for his education.
Cassius Ellis Scholarship
The scholarship was established by family and friends in memory of Dr. Cassius M. C. Ellis III, former assistant dean and clinical professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Ellis brought many minority students into the medical profession and was a mentor to minority students and physicians.
Garth Englund Scholarship
Mary Englund and her husband, the late Dr. Garth Englund, established this scholarship for outstanding students at the University of Minnesota Medical School. Dr. Englund is a graduate of the Class of 1955.
John C. and Eloise K. Erkkila Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship provides one or more scholarships to new students at the Medical School. The fund recognizes the contributions of Dr. John C. Erkkila, a 1971 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and Eloise K. Erkkila, a graduate in nursing.
Lee and Bonnie Espeland Scholarship
The scholarship honors the lifework of Dr. Lee Espeland and his wife, Bonnie. Dr. Espeland, a 1967 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, established the scholarship in appreciation for his medical education.
Louis Bartlett Folsom and Marjorie Folsom Scholarship
The scholarship honors the life and work of Dr. Louis Bartlett Folsom and his wife, Marjorie Folsom. Dr. Folsom is a graduate of the Class of 1943.
William and Ruth Foster Scholarship
This scholarship honors the lifework of Dr. William and Ruth Foster and will provide one or more scholarships annually to outstanding University of Minnesota Medical School students with a demonstrated financial need.
Dr. Richard J. Frey Scholarship
The scholarship is established by Dr. Frey, Medical School Class of 1946 (March), in recognition of the education and training he received at the University. After serving on the Department of Medicine’s faculty for two years, Dr. Frey enjoyed a long and successful career as an internist in the Twin Cities community.
Joyce L. Funke Women Medical Students Scholarship
The scholarship was created by bequest of Dr. Joyce Funke, an alumna of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1950. The gift recognizes Dr. Funke’s appreciation for her medical education.
Dan Gall Memorial Human Spirit Scholarship
The scholarship memorializes Dr. Dan Gall, a 1989 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, who died of cancer that year. Family, friends, and classmates have contributed to the endowment of the scholarship.
Dr. C. E. and Inez Gates Scholarship
Dr. Emily H. Gates, Class of 1939, established the scholarship to honor her parents and recognize their medical leadership in Minnesota. Dr. C. E. Gates, her father, was a 1904 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School.
N. L. Gault, M.D., Honorary Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Royal C. Gray, Class of 1923. Dr. N. L. Gault, who is a former dean of the Medical School, was Dr. Gray’s personal physician. More information.
Sarah J. Gault Scholarship
The scholarship was created in memory of Dr. Sarah J. Gault, an alumna of the Class of 1950, by her husband, Dr. N. L. Gault, colleagues, and friends. Sarah Gault served on the University faculty in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Dr. Robert and Mary Giebink Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Robert and Mary Giebink in appreciation for the medical education he received at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Giebink was a member of the Class of 1942.
Dr. Max W. and Frances Halpern Goldberg Scholarship for Medicine
The scholarship was established by Marvin and Miriam Goldberg in memory of their parents. Dr. Max W. Goldberg was a 1920 graduate of the University’s School of Dentistry, and Frances Halpern Goldberg was a 1924 graduate of the College of Education.
Royal C. and Mary H. Gray Scholarship
The scholarship was established by bequest of Dr. Royal Gray, who graduated from the Medical School in 1923, to provide financial assistance to first-year medical students.
 
Burton P. Grimes Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Jean Covert Sauer, Class of 1956 and graduate of the Department of Psychiatry’s residency program, to honor and express her appreciation for the late Dr. Burton P. Grimes, Class of 1932. Dr. Grimes, who served as medical director of the former St. Peter Regional Treatment Center, was an important mentor for her, providing tremendous encouragement and support throughout her career.
Eleanor B. Iverson Gunlaugson Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Marilyn Gunlaugson. The fund honors her mother, Dr. Eleanor Iverson Gunlaugson, a 1934 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and serves as a lasting tribute to the value Marilyn and her mother placed on education. This scholarship helps support the Dean’s Scholars program.
Frederick G. Gunlaugson Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Marilyn Gunlaugson. The fund honors her father, Dr. Frederick Gunlaugson, a 1934 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and serves as a lasting tribute to the value he placed on education and preventive medicine. This scholarship helps support the Dean’s Scholars program.
 
Elizabeth M. Haaland, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Haaland, Medical School Class of 1960, and a 1962 graduate of the Department of Dermatology’s residency program.
Half-Century Club Scholarship
The scholarship was established with contributions from individuals who graduated from the University of Minnesota Medical School 50 or more years ago.
Harry B. Hall, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. and Mrs. Harry Hall in recognition of his contribution to the medical profession. He was an alumnus of the Medical School, Class of 1935.
Shirley A. and Roger B. Hallgren Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Roger Hallgren, M.D., Medical School Class of 1956, who after serving in the Air Force, served Minnesota’s Belle Plaine community as a family practitioner since 1960.
Robert Fenton Hannigan and Jean L. St. Jean Hannigan Scholarship
The scholarship was created by Jean L. St. Jean Hannigan and serves as a tribute to her commitment to improving health. A member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, she was a direct descendant of Dr. Benjamin Rush, President George Washington’s doctor, and the only physician with medical school training to sign the Declaration of Independence.
Hanold Family Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Ruth Hanold and members of her family in memory of her husband, Terrance, who served on the Minnesota Medical Foundation board of trustees and as its president from 1984 to 1986.
Mildred S. Hanson, M.D., Scholarship
The scholarship honors Dr. Mildred S. Hanson, a Class of 1951 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and serves as a lasting tribute to the value she places on education. A widely respected obstetrician and gynecologist, Dr. Hanson has been a tireless advocate for women’s reproductive rights.
Robert Leonard Hart Endowment for Internal Medicine
The fund was created in appreciation and recognition of the excellent clinical care Robert Leonard Hart received at the University of Minnesota. This fund will be used to support students specializing in internal medicine.
Hartig Family Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Marjorie Hartig, Class of 1939, and serves as a lasting tribute to her family’s contribution to the practice of medicine. Dr. Hartig’s parents, Hugo Hartig and Hermina Hermanson, both graduated from the University of Minnesota in 1914.
Donald W. Hastings, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Richard W. Anderson and serves as a lasting tribute to the memory of Professor Donald W. Hastings, the former head of the Department of Psychiatry, who recruited Dr. Anderson to join the Medical School’s faculty in 1953.
Drennen Bros Hauser Family Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship is made possible by Helen B. Hauser and serves as a lasting tribute to the value she places on education and her commitment to improving health for future generations.
Dr. Kenneth B. and Karen S. Heithoff Scholarship
The scholarship honors the lifework of Dr. Kenneth Heithoff and expresses his appreciation for financial support provided to him by the Minnesota Medical Foundation. Dr. Heithoff graduated from the Medical School in 1969.
Claire J. Hemingway Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Claire J. Hemingway and serves as a tribute to the value she placed on education.
Corrin H. Hodgson, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship was created in honor of the late Dr. Corrin H. Hodgson, Medical School Class of 1932, who practiced internal medicine at the Mayo Clinic and later worked as the corporate medical director of 3M. Dr. Hodgson also served on the Board of Trustees of the Minnesota Medical Foundation.
High Ability Scholarship Fund
These scholarships, funded annually by the Minnesota Medical Foundation, benefit scholars deemed to be of high ability.
Dr. Lucille J. Hoilund and Audrey E. Hoilund Scholarship
This scholarship recognizes the contributions of the Hoilund sisters to the University of Minnesota and honors their commitment to making opportunities available to others. Dr. Lucille Hoilund was a 1948 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School and completed her residency in pathology before pursuing hematology research. Her sister, Audrey Hoilund, worked in the business office at the Duluth campus and later transferred to the Twin Cities campus.
Drs. Helene and Charles Horwitz Scholarship Fund
This scholarship recognizes the long relationship between Drs. Helene and Charles Horwitz and the University of Minnesota Medical School. The late Dr. Helene Horwitz worked with medical students and faculty through the Minnesota Medical Foundation from 1982 to 1989 and then as the Medical School’s associate dean of students until 2008. Since 1992, she also represented the school on a scholastic committee monitoring student academic progress. An award-winning teacher, Dr. Charles Horwitz, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, taught medical students and mentored residents and fellows from 1968 to 2008.
Hyman Horwitz Endowed Scholarship
Mr. Hyman Horwitz created this fund with a significant estate gift to support scholarships for students pursuing medical education.
James and Janelle House Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. James and Mrs. Janelle House in appreciation for the medical education that he received at the University of Minnesota and as a reflection of his confidence in the school’s future. Dr. House graduated from the Medical School in 1963.
James T. Housewright Scholarship
The scholarship is made possible by a contribution from the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union.
Robert B. Howard, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Robert B. Howard, and serves as a lasting tribute to his commitment and contribution to medical education. Dr. Howard earned his M.D. degree from the Medical School in 1944 and over the next two years also completed his internship and residency training in internal medicine at the University. He was appointed dean of the Medical School in 1958, a position he held until 1971.
Dr. Solomon E. and Sylvia Howard Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Bruce D. Howard, Medical School Class of 1962, and Roseanne A. Howard created this fund in honor of Dr. Howard’s parents, Dr. Solomon E. Howard, Medical School Class of 1928, and Sylvia Howard, to recognize the outstanding medical education that Dr. Howard and his father received from the University.
Ludolf J. and Inez F. Hoyer Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Leon Hoyer, a member of the Class of 1962. He established the scholarship in memory of his parents. His father, Dr. Ludolf Hoyer, was a graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1932, and a general practitioner in Windom, Minnesota.
The Helen K. and C. Sherman Hoyt, M.D., Endowed Scholarship
The fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Helen K. and Dr. C. Sherman Hoyt, Class of 1953, and serves as a lasting tribute to the value they placed on education.
Dr. Samuel W. Hunter Endowed Scholarship
This scholarship honors the late Dr. Hunter, a pioneer in pacemaker technology, and his research, work, and life by providing support for medical students as they pursue their education.
Glenda Taylor Huston Scholarship of Courage
The scholarship recognizes the tremendous courage exhibited by Dr. Richard Huston’s wife, Glenda Taylor Huston, in facing significant medical challenges. It further recognizes her physicians, Dr. Sheldon Burns, Dr. David Hunter, Dr. David Walk, and Dr. Daniel Weisdorf.
Martin and Charlotte Janssen Endowed Scholarship Fund for Medical Students

Charlotte Karlsrude was born in Red Wing and returned to her hometown after her husband, Gilbert, passed away. She enjoyed gardening, nature, camping, playing cards, entertaining, and traveling.
B. J. Kennedy Oncology Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Lorie Long Michaels to honor Dr. B. J. Kennedy. He was Emeritus Regents’ Professor of Medicine and Emeritus Masonic Professor of Oncology at the University.
Dr. Thomas J. Kinsella Scholarship
The scholarship was created by bequest of Dr. Thomas J. Kinsella, a member of the Medical School Class of 1919, and his wife, Sarah. Their gift recognizes Dr. Kinsella’s appreciation for his medical education.

The scholarship was established by Donna and Dr. William H. Knobloch, professor emeritus and former interim chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, in recognition of his medical education and the financial assistance he received.

Dr. Arnold J. Kremen Scholarship in Surgery
This scholarship honors the memory of Dr. Arnold Kremen and his wonderful legacy as a gifted, caring, and internationally recognized surgeon. The fund was established by friends and colleagues of Dr. Kremen, who was a 1937 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School.

This scholarship was established to provide financial assistance to medical students.
Dr. William G. and Rosemary Kubicek Scholarship
From 1947 to 1952, Dr. Kubicek served the University as a professor in the Department of Medicine, and served as professor of physical medicine and rehabilitation from 1953 until his retirement in 1982. Dr. Kubicek developed the first heart monitoring system to measure externally, through electrodes, the amount of blood a heart pumps. This device was used by the world’s first human heart transplant team in Cape Town, South Africa in 1967.
Lois Ruth Lambert, M.D., Scholarship

W. Duncan MacMillan Memorial Fund
The Fund honors the late W. Duncan MacMillan by serving as a fitting tribute to his energy, boundless enthusiasm for life, and faith in the exciting possibilities of medicine. MacMillan, a respected business leader, philanthropist, and community volunteer, passed away in October 2006 after a courageous three-year struggle with cancer and heart disease.

The scholarship was established by Dr. Deane and Nancy Manolis. Dr. Manolis is a graduate of the Medical School Class of 1962. The fund honors the lives of his parents, who had limited educational opportunities themselves but highly valued the pursuit of education and advanced training.

The scholarship was established by Jane and John W. McLinden, M.D., Medical School Class of 1951. Dr. McLinden was a native of Detroit Lakes, Minn. After serving as a Navy flyer in World War II, he entered medical school and established his medical practice in Santa Clara, Calif., but continued to fondly recall years in Minneapolis and maintained strong ties to Minnesota.

This fund was established by the late Dr. Vincent Paciotti, Class of 1947. He was originally from Virginia, Minnesota, and completed his residency in radiology. He spent his career serving patients in Hibbing and throughout northern Minnesota.

The scholarship recognizes the contributions of Dr. Mark Paller to the University of Minnesota Medical School and the Pallers’ support for Medical School students who are most in need, including those students who are underrepresented in medicine and those who are first-generation college graduate medical students. Dr. Paller’s service to the University began in 1982 as a nephrologist.

Philip Y. Paterson, M.D., Neuroimmunology Scholarship
The scholarship recognizes the work and education of the late Dr. Philip Y. Paterson, who attended the University of Minnesota for undergraduate work and graduated from the Medical School in 1947. His work in experimental allergic encephalomyelitis, an animal model for investigating multiple sclerosis, paved the way for creating the field of neuroimmunology. He was a professor emeritus at Northwestern University.

Bernard Statland Scholarship Fund
Dr. Bernard Statland was a lifelong learner and received all of his degrees from the University of Minnesota. He completed his undergraduate degree in 1963, his medical degree in 1968, a doctorate in biochemistry in 1970, and a law degree in 2003. Preference is given for students who plan to pursue both a degree in medicine and a doctorate.

The scholarship was established with gifts from Dr. Harold and Kathryn Stratte’s children, Georgia Stratte Smith, Mary Stratte Kalis, and Harold C. Stratte Jr. Dr. Stratte was a 1920 graduate of the Medical School.
Dr. Bernard & Mary Louise Street Endowed Scholarship
This fund was established by Bernard and Mary Lou Street. Dr. Street, of Northfield, Minn., was a 1937 graduate of the Medical School.
Eugene S. Strout, M.D., Family Practice Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Eugene S. Strout, an alumnus of the Medical School Class of 1964, and a practicing pathologist in Southern California.
Barbara H. Subak Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Jean Covert Sauer, Class of 1956, to honor the work of Dr. Barbara Subak, Class of 1955, who was Dr. Sauer’s personal physician.
Albert Sullivan Scholarship
Dr. Albert Sullivan was professor of surgery at the University of Minnesota and for many years associate dean of students. The scholarship was established by an alumnus who appreciated Dr. Sullivan’s many efforts to support medical students through the years. Family and friends have made additional contributions.
Auleen R. and Willis G. Sweet Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Auleen R. Sweet and fund serves as a lasting tribute to the value she and her husband, Willis, placed on medical education.
Luigi Taddeini Scholarship
The scholarship was established in memory of Dr. Luigi Taddeini by his widow, with additional contributions from friends. Dr. Taddeini received his medical degree from the University of Rome. At the time of his death, he was chairman and president of Ramsey Clinic in St. Paul.
Mary Hilbert Teberg, M.D., Memorial Scholarship
The fund was created in memory of Dr. Mary Hilbert Teberg and honors her splendid character. Dr. Teberg was a 1947 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, where she also completed her neuropsychiatric residency. She worked primarily with young adult and adolescent patients in the Twin Cities.
Dr. Hulda Thelander Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the late Dr. Hulda Thelander, Class of 1924. After spending a year as a medical missionary in China, Dr. Thelander established a pediatrics practice in San Francisco.
Edward K. Thode Sr. Endowed Scholarship
This fund honors the memory of Edward K. Thode Sr., former general counsel for the General Mills Corporation and a respected Minneapolis citizen and community leader.
Dr. Theodore and Lynette Thompson Scholarship Endowed Fund
This fund was established in honor of Dr. Theodore and Lynette Thompson to honor their dedication to children and the medical field.
Jeri and Joseph C. Thorne Scholarship
The scholarship reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of the late Joseph C. Thorne Jr. and his wife, Geraldine “Jeri” Thorne.

Variety Endowed Scholarship
The scholarship was established through the generosity of Patricia S. and Dr. Russell V. Lucas. The fund serves as a lasting tribute to the Variety Children’s Association in recognition of Variety’s longtime, significant support of the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Victor and Robert Vaughan Scholarship
The scholarship was established through the estate of Robert Vaughan in his name and that of his father, Dr. Victor Vaughn, who lived in Truman, Minnesota, and practiced medicine in Fairmont.
Lillian and Harold Vines Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Lillian Vines in 1983 to honor the memory of her husband, Harold Vines.
Dr. Thomas G. Virnig Courage Scholarship
The scholarship was established by the family and friends of Dr. Thomas P. Virnig, a 2005 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, who died that year after a long battle against leukemia. The fund honors him, his love of medicine, and the courage, grace, and dignity with which he fought his leukemia.
Dr. Jack and Constance Wallinga Endowment
This endowment fund reflects the thoughtfulness and generosity of Dr. Jack and Constance Wallinga. Dr. Wallinga graduated with the Class of 1946 and went on to complete his internship and residency in the Department of Psychiatry at the University.
William J. and John D. Watson Scholarship
The scholarship was established in honor of Dr. William Watson, a 1933 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School, and the life work of his son John, a 1963 graduate. The fund honors the family’s commitment to excellence in medical care.
Paul D. Wellstone Memorial Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. Jean Covert Sauer, Class of 1956, to pay tribute to Senator Wellstone’s tremendous contributions to the field of mental health and to society as a whole.
Dr. Alvin D. & Ruth D. Wert Endowed Scholarship
Dr. Alvin D. and Ruth D. Wert created this fund to serve as a lasting tribute to the value they place on education.
Paul T. White, J.D., Scholarship Fund
This scholarship fund was created by David S. Rose and his wife, Gail R. Gremse, in recognition of Paul White’s dedication as an admissions professional. David Rose and Paul White were classmates at Yale University and graduated together in 1979. Mr. White is associate dean of admissions at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Sharon K. Wildung Memorial Scholarship
The fund is created in memory of Sharon Wildung by her husband and children and to honor the confidence she placed in her physician, Dr. David Rothenberger, and the University medical students who cared for her.
George E. and Alice M. Williams Medical Student Scholarship
The scholarship was established in memory of Dr. George Williams, a former professor of psychiatry and assistant dean of student affairs at the University of Minnesota Medical School, and in memory of his wife, Alice.
George H. and Lillian K. Williams Scholarship
The scholarship was established by bequest of Mr. George and Lillian Williams for students interested in otolaryngology.
Wohlrabe Family Endowed Scholarship
Five generations of the Wohlrabe family have received their medical education at the University of Minnesota. Arthur A. Wohlrabe was a member of the Class of 1913, and his brothers, Clarence F. and Edwin J. Wohlrabe, were members of the classes of 1924 and 1925, respectively. This fund honors the Wohlrabe family’s contribution to the practice of medicine and serves as a tribute to the value the family places on education. Dr. Donald Wohlrabe established the fund.
James Wolff Scholarship
The scholarship was established in memory of Major James Degrraff Wolff, M.D., by his family. Dr. Wolff was a 1987 graduate of the University of Minnesota Medical School and specialized in orthopaedic surgery. He was a devoted father who valued time spent with his family and cared deeply for his patients.
Lillian S. Wong, M.D., Endowed Scholarship for Asian Women
The scholarship was established by Dr. Wong, Medical School Class of 1949, who passed away in December 2008.
Karen Wyckoff Rein-in-Sarcoma Foundation Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Karen Wyckoff Rein-in-Sarcoma Foundation, created by Karen Wyckoff shortly before her death from synovial sarcoma in August 2001. The scholarship is awarded to medical students interested in musculoskeletal oncology.
John R. Ylvisaker Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Dr. John Ylvisaker, an alumnus of the University of Minnesota Medical School, Class of 1947.
Zagaria Scholarship
The scholarship was established by Jane Stern in memory of her brothers Claude, Dr. James, and Samuel, all graduates of the University.
Dr. James A. Zeese Scholarship
The scholarship is established by Dr. Zeese, Medical School Class of 1965, in gratitude for the excellent medical education he received and to support medical students in their pursuit of a world-class medical education at the University of Minnesota.
