Awards Program

Each April, the Medical Alumni Society board of directors selects recipients for the following awards:

Diehl Award

The Harold S. Diehl Award was established in 1962 to honor the fifth dean of the Medical School Harold Sheely Diehl, M.D.. This prestigious lifetime award is granted to individuals who have made outstanding professional contributions to the Medical School, the University, and the community.

Nominees should:

  • Be graduates of the University of Minnesota Medical School *
  • Not be currently employed in an academic capacity *
  • Have made outstanding contributions to the University of Minnesota Medical School, the University, alumni, and the community
  • Have significant experience in the field of medical service or a related field

Distinguished Alumni Award

The Distinguished Alumni Award, formerly known as the Alumni Recognition Award, recognizes University of Minnesota Medical School graduates who have made outstanding contributions to their communities — at the local, regional, or national level — through medical practice, teaching, research, or other humanitarian activities. Nominees should be graduates of the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Early Distinguished Career Award

The Early Distinguished Career Award is given to a physician for exceptional accomplishments within 15 years of graduating from medical school.

Nominees should:

  • Be academically affiliated with the University of Minnesota Medical School
  • Have demonstrated (1) exceptional achievement in the field of medicine or in the Minnesota medical community or (2) exceptional and outstanding service to the University of Minnesota Medical School.

Nomination Requirements

All nominations must be received by March 28, 2008. Awards will be presented during Medical School Reunion Weekend on Friday, September 26.

Nominations for the Harold S. Diehl Award are kept on file for five years. Nominations for the Distinguished Alumni Award and Early Distinguished Career Award are not held after the recipients are chosen each year.

To submit a nomination for one of these awards, please prepare and/or collect the following materials:

  • primary letter of nomination
  • supporting letters of nomination
  • a curriculum vitae (CV) or a detailed account of the nominee's accomplishments
