Top physiology researcher joins Medical School
Metzger
Joseph M. Metzger, Ph.D., has joined the University as a professor and head of the Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology, which has programs in both the College of Liberal Arts and the Medical School. One of the country’s premier molecular and integrative physiologists, he also will hold the Maurice Visscher Endowed Chair in Physiology.
Metzger is well known for his expertise in cardiovascular performance in health and disease, with a focus on genetic and chemical-based therapies. He was recruited from the University of Michigan, where he was a professor and associate chair of the Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology as well as director of the Center for Integrative Genomics. He is also an award-winning educator who has mentored more than 60 undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs, and fellows, many of whom have gone on to tenure-track professorships.
“Integrative biology and physiology embodies the next generation of discovery in biomedical sciences by embracing biological complexity from molecular building blocks to the living organism,” says Metzger, who joined the University in August. “I am honored and thrilled to accept this exciting position.”
Medical School Dean Deborah Powell, M.D., says University leaders are delighted to have someone of Metzger’s high caliber join the team. “He is an outstanding educator, and I am confident that he is exactly the right leader for our new Department of Integrative Biology and Physiology.”
