Program of Mortuary Science receives a historic gift as it turns 100

The Medical School’s Program of Mortuary Science turns 100 this year—it’s one of the oldest in the nation—and will mark the special anniversary with a banquet, program, and related activities November 1 at Coffman Memorial Union on the University’s East Bank.

Established in 1908 by the University’s Board of Regents, the program is the only one of its kind at a Big Ten university to be fully accredited by the American Board of Funeral Service Education. It’s also one of only a few to confer degrees through a medical school.

In addition to its centennial, the program is also celebrating a $200,000 gift establishing the Leo A. Hodroff Scholarship. Alumnus Leo Hodroff made the gift—the program’s largest to date—in December. For many years, he has been a Twin Cities community leader through his family’s mortuaries, Hodroff and Sons Chapels.

The University’s President’s Scholarship Match effectively doubles this scholarship’s payout, making the program the nation’s first to provide a full-tuition scholarship to a mortuary science student. The new scholarship will be awarded every two years.
