Alzheimer's disease, multiple sclerosis, and Parkinson's disease affect more than 50 million Americans every year.

While researchers around the world are searching for causes and treatments for these and other brain and nerve disorders, experts at the University of Minnesota are emerging as leaders in the field.

Researchers here are leading the way in understanding the brain's development, functions, and diseases. Our scientists have recently reversed memory loss in mice with significant brain degeneration for the first time — a breakthrough that offers hope to the four million people living with Alzheimer's disease. They also have identified five genes linked to specific forms of hereditary ataxia, a disease that leads to loss of muscle coordination and balance.

Other investigators are studying ways to overcome the effects of brain injury, therapies to slow the progression of degenerative diseases, and the brain mechanisms that go awry in mental illness.

Gift Opportunities

Ways your gift can support brain and nerve research at the University include:

  • Contributing to research generally or giving to research into a specific focus, such as Alzheimer's, ALS, ataxia, brain tumors, multiple sclerosis, muscular dystrophy, neurodevelopment abnormalities, pain disorder, Parkinson's, schizophrenia, spinal disorders, or stroke
  • Funding innovative pilot studies at the University to understand brain functioning and to help advance treatment possibilities for people with brain and nerve disorders
  • Supporting a specific doctor's research projects or programs or making a memorial gift in a loved one's honor
