Until recently, women have been overwhelmingly underrepresented in health research studies.

As a result, health professionals are recognizing how little they know about women's health. But researchers at the University of Minnesota are working to fill that gap.

Doctors at the Medical School are researching issues that affect women throughout their lives, from high-risk obstetrics to menopause and osteoporosis. With research in these areas and many others — including heart disease, depression, eating disorders, urinary incontinence, and hormone replacement therapy — they're striving to help women live healthier lives.

The University is home to the Deborah E. Powell Center for Women's Health, named a National Center of Excellence by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in September 2003. Because of its status as one of 19 National Centers of Excellence, the center has more opportunities to expand its work in research, clinics, academics, outreach, and leadership.
