Giving FAQ

Frequently asked questions about giving

Where are gifts to the Minnesota Medical Foundation directed?
Gifts to the Minnesota Medical Foundation support education and research in the University of Minnesota Medical School, School of Public Health, Cancer Center, and other related units in the University’s Academic Health Center. In fiscal year 2005 contributions went to research (52%), academic support (26%), capital improvements (13%), student scholarships (5%), and other areas (4%). In addition, the Minnesota Medical Foundation also works with three affiliate organizations: the Bob Allison Ataxia Research Center, and the International Hearing Foundation.
Where do gifts come from?
In fiscal year 2005, 16,610 of our benefactors, or nearly three-fourths of the total, were individuals from outside the University; a little more than one-fifth, or 4,764, were alumni, faculty, and staff. An additional 1,364 donors included corporations, organizations, and foundations.
Why does my receipt come from the Minnesota Medical Foundation, when I actually made my gift to the University Pediatrics Foundation, Masonic Cancer Center, Diabetes Institute, or some other program?
You can be assured that your gift will go to the center, department, program, or institute you designate—even if your receipt comes from the Minnesota Medical Foundation. To reduce administrative costs and duplication of efforts, the Minnesota Medical Foundation provides Fundraising support for, and processes gifts made to, all areas of the University for which it raises funds. If you have questions about the processing of your gift, contact the gift processing manager, Tere Haas, at 612-625-1478 or t.haas@mmf.umn.edu.
How do I make a gift in someone’s memory?
If you’re making a gift by cash or check, you can mail your gift to:

Minnesota Medical Foundation
P.O. Box 64001
St. Paul, MN 55164-0001

Simply indicate in a note the name of the person being remembered.

You can also make a gift in someone’s honor or memory by using our secure online gift form.

In addition to sending an acknowledgment to you, we are happy to send notification of your gift (without amount) if you give us the name and address of the person to be notified.

What is a matching gift?
Financial support is provided by companies through employee matching gift programs. These companies match their employees’ donations to nonprofit organizations, enabling their employees to multiply their support by doubling, or in some cases tripling employee gifts. Matching gifts can be made through cash or pledges. Find out if your company has a matching gift program and create a matching gift to the Minnesota Medical Foundation today.
How can I leave my body to the University for medical research?
Under the current statutes of the State of Minnesota, it is possible for an individual to bequeath his or her body to the University of Minnesota. For complete information, contact the Anatomy Bequest Program at 612-622-1111 or bequest@umn.edu, or visit the program’s Web site at www.bequest.umn.edu.
