J. Jacob Kaplan Award
Three J. Jacob Kaplan awards are presented annually for the most meritorious student papers on either clinical or basic medical research and includes a cash prize of $4,000. An award is available for research in three fields of medicine: immunology in diagnosis and treatment of cancer; gastroenterology; and, cardiology. The awards are intended to encourage and recognize scholarly achievement in medical research by young investigators at the University of Minnesota Medical School.
Application Process
Appropriate applications:
- Must be based on unpublished, substantially completed or completed manuscripts. Abstracts will not be accepted, nor will grant proposals.
- Describe medical research conducted within the past three years, at least a portion of it at the University of Minnesota. The research may cover more than a single year's work and must have been primarily conceived and conducted by the student.
- May be filed in the name of single or co-authors.
- Mail or deliver an original and 15 copies of a cover letter outlining the nature of the research, completed application form (Microsoft Word), the research paper, and a letter of sponsorship from a member of the faculty.
Applicants include:
- Currently enrolled or those who have been enrolled during the previous academic year as undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Minnesota Medical School, Twin Cities or Duluth campuses.
- Individuals who have conducted medical research under supervision in any Medical School department.
The winning paper or papers will be selected by the Honors and Awards Committee of the Minnesota Medical Foundation, which will have final authority on questions of eligibility and merit.
